determiner （限定词）的功能是对名词进行限定。例如：
- My brother 这个词组中的 my，是对 brother 进行限定，限定了是 my brother, 不是 your brother, 不是 his brother, 不是 her brother. 所以，类似 my 这样的，your, his ,her, their, our, its 等， 都起到同样的作用，都可以归到determiner（限定词）这个词类。
- This book 这个词组中的 this, 是对 book 进行限定，限定了是 是 this book, 而不是 that book, 或者随便一本 book. 所以，类似 this 这样的，that book 中的 that, these books 中的 these, those books 中的 those，the book 中的 the, 也都可以归到 determiner（限定词）这个词类。
- three apples 这个词组中的 three, 是从数量上对 apples 进行限定，限定了是 three apples, 而不是 four apples, 或者 five apples, 或者 two apples， 或者 an apple， 或者 many apples, some apples. 所以，类似的，four, five, two, an, many, some 等也都可以起到同样的作用，都可以归到 determiner（限定词）这个词类。
- first time 这个词组中的 first, 限定了是 first time, 而不是 second time, 或者 third time, 或者 fourth time. 所以，类似 first 这样的， second， third, fourth 等序数词，也都可以归到 determiner （限定词）这个词类。
