- When you set off, you start a journey.
- Bill will set off for Shenzhen next Monday.
- The travelers set off on a new trip.
- If something sets off something such as an alarm or a bomb, it makes it start working so that, for example, the alarm rings or the bomb explodes.

- Someone set off a fire extinguisher.
- If something sets off an event or a series of events, it cause it to start happening.
- The government policy set off a major riot in that country.
- When you set out, you start a journey. 这种情况下,set out 和 set off 是同义词。例如:
- When setting out on a long walk, you’d better wear a pair of endurable boots.
- When the poet set out for Lyonnesse it was winter season.
- If you set out to do something, you start trying to do it.
- Bill set out to be a doctor 4 years ago.
- Great leaders don’t set out to be a LEADER. They set out to make a DIFFERENCE. It’s never about the ROLE - always about the GOAL.
- If you set things out, you arrange or display them somewhere.
- You should set out your products attractively so that people will appreciate them.
- If you set out a number of facts, beliefs, or arguments, you explain them in writing or speech in a clear, organized way.
- We don’t know your opinion. Could you set out your view briefly?
Bill set _____ (off/out) early to catch the train.
- The delay of payment will set off a lawsuit.
- The smoke set off the fire alarm.
- The writer set out on chapter one of his novel.
- I set out to get my work done this afternoon.
- The parents set _______ (out / off) in search of their lost child.
还是 off 呢?
- We will have to set off for the station at 2:00 this afternoon.
- Jenny has just set off on a round-the-world cruise.
- Mary set out to become a world champion.
- That doctor set out to discover a cure for AIDS.
- That theft set out to deceive an old lady.
- He set out southwestward, made his way after great hardship to Palestine, found one friend there and set off again toward the west.
- They are setting out the tableware.
- He set out the principles which we were to follow.
- The background set off the picture very imaginatively.
- Her black dress set off her diamonds.
