‘apart from’ vs ‘except for’ vs ‘except’

apart from, 介词。 在不同的语境中，意思可以不一样。在有的语境中，它是 including 的意思；在有的语境中，它是 excluding 的意思。

而 except for, 介词，只有 excluding 的意思。

例如：

• Apart from Japan, they also visited Korea and Vietnam. (包括Japan在内)
• I have visited all those countries apart from Japan.（不包括Japan在内）
• Apart from Sunday, I will have time to accompany you. (不包括 Sunday)

except 也是 excluding 的意思. except 除了可以作介词用，还可以做连词用，except 做连词用时，引导从句。而except for 是介词，不可以引导从句。

例如：

• I am a good man except that I am a little bit lazy.
• Our dresses were the same except mine was blue.

except 做介词用时，不能用在句首，用在句首的只能是 except for.

例如：

• Except for my life, I have nothing to lose.

except 做介词用时，通常后面接的名词是前面所表达的集合的一部分。except for 做介词用时，其后面接的名词，既可以是前面所表达的集合的一部分，也可以不隶属于前面的集合。例如：

• I work everyday except (for) Sunday.
• All my friends came except (for) Bill.
• This composition is very good except for some grammar errors.

except for 还可以表示“要不是由于….” 的意思，这种用法其实 for 和 except 在涵义上不是组在一起的，for 后面接补语，表示“为了…..”， 例如：

• I wouldn’t have accepted a pay cut except for a job in Europe.  如果为了一份在欧洲的工作，我是不会接受降薪的。
